Inspired by Dawoud Bey’s exhibition titled “Elegy” which focused on the journeys and realities of slaves on the Virginia Slave Trail, Louisiana plantations, and Oklahoma Underground Railroad. I was deeply inspired by his ability to capture the environment and emotions in each environment showing the trauma and hurt that lived on for centuries. I was moved by how he captured the southern landscape; growing up in Georgia myself it reminded me of playing outside as a kid and the grass blowing in the wind while running through the forest exploring. The sounds of the crunchy dry grass, and sight of the thick, twisted, curved trunks, as we explored grounds with deeper trauma than we could’ve imagined.

Henceforth, “Roots” was made, trees live for centuries and centuries seeing all and absorbing all that fall onto the Earth. The pain and fight our ancestors had to endure is deeply rooted on all of those lands and in the systems we face everyday. A double entendre to the fact that every system is deeply grounded into every action we make. If there is one thing about trees, it is that they will always grow upward; strengthening their roots to bear the fruit of their circumstances. And we are given the same fruit regardless of circumstance. How are you planting your fruit for those next to come?
